BRAIDWOOD ARTS

Residencies

Nestled in 16 acres on the edge of town, Braidwood Arts has views across the landscape to the eastern mountains of the Southern Tablelands.

Architect designed accommodation, an etching press, workshops set in gardens with abundant Australian wildlife, all make an ideal space for teaching or guests on artist retreat. We are off-grid, self-sufficient in power, water, and with wood heating in winter and ample summer swimming in the Lilly- clad dam on the property or in the nearby Shoalhaven River, home to the endearing and endangered platypus.

Located in the southern tablelands of New South Wales, Braidwood is a picturesque town of significant heritage dating back to the early 1800s. An hour from the national capital of Canberra, an hour from the beautiful beaches of the south coast, and two hours from the southern Alps of the snow fields, it is a food lovers delight with gourmet cafes and bespoke distilleries. It has a significant artist population, with national and international talents calling it their home and contributing to the community's artistic ambience.

In 1980, Fran was an avid Ceramic artist with a Pottery Studio & School called The Potters Wheel in Neutral Bay, Sydney.

Both were Japanese trained. As newlyweds they settled into Tallaganda Pottery, a national trust registered, main street premise to make and sell their ceramics, and raise a family.

Years later, Fran was to retrain as a traditional signwriter, leading to a rich career in public art [ see custom work]. This led to an offer of a Post Graduate position of study at the Canberra School of Art in Print-media and Drawing, eventually rolling into a Masters. Since graduating in 2008, her art practice has been based in paper, usually Hahnemulhe cotton rag and hand deckled, using print techniques, natural dye, inks, gouache and acrylics. The 3D and textural quality of wood fired Ceramics still influencing her work.

Artist Books, sculptures using book making techniques is also a favourite form of expression.
